15th April, 2017

Spring into nature and come see the living breathing symbol of the American West!

Lake Tahoe is unique for many reasons, it’s majestic towering pine trees, it’s pristine clear azure blue waters and it’s colorful history, but that is not the only thing which makes this area special, Lake Tahoe also spans two different states; California and Nevada.

Located in Nevada, just a short drive from Hotel Azure Tahoe, is the Virginia Range, a small mountain range unique and wonderful to the Lake Tahoe Area.  When visiting Hotel Azure be sure to take this drive as you will be able to experience the wonders of what are referred to as “Annie’s Horses”, the Mustangs of the Wild West.

Nevada is home to nearly half of the wild Mustang horses in North America and this particular herd is the reason that wild Mustangs are protected to this day. During the spring months, as life starts to bloom all around us, you can see the foal of this dignified equine species frolic and play as they grow and learn to be proud adults.

The historic Virginia Range herd, over 1,400 strong, can be found living wild and free between Virginia City, Reno, Dayton and Carson City. Desert hiking trails are throughout the area and maps can be found at a Bureau of Land Management office or online. And should these guys melt your heart like the melting snow around you please adopt one, more information about this can be found here.

A little closer to Hotel Azure is the Pine Nut Wild Horses, this herd is a bit smaller in numbers but is just as majestic and beautiful to observe. Tours of the Pine Nut Wild Horses are provided by John Humphrey for $200 for three hours (up to three people) and $50. per hour thereafter. You can confirm reservations at www.WildHorsesNV.com.

If you would prefer a tour of the Virginia Range Herd please contact our friendly Guest Services department or Sonny Boy Tours for more information.
