4th of July Celebrations in Lake Tahoe
The experience of celebrating America's Independence Day in Lake Tahoe is unlike anything else in the country. In fact, the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) and NBC's Today Show rate South Lake Tahoe’s 4th of July spectacular fireworks celebration as one of the top five fireworks displays in the nation! Celebrating the holiday in Tahoe means your day will be filled with fun, sun, and all kinds of lake activities, while you’re likely to spend your evening eating BBQ, enjoying some cold drinks, and watching the famous “Lights on the Lake” fireworks show. Whether you are trying to avoid crowds, or you love staking your claim and setting up your view spot by early morning, we’ve got some great locations to take in the show!
For the 4th of July Traditionalists
Located about two miles east of the Nevada casinos on Elk Point Road, Nevada Beach is the ideal setting for family fun. A wide and sandy shoreline leads down to the clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Charcoal barbecue pits and picnic tables are readily available along the beach, so there’s enough for everyone. The beach has an amazing view of Mount Tallac with minimal tree interference, offering a clear view of the fireworks that’s one of the best in town. And if you make your way to the south end of Nevada Beach, your furry best friend can join in on the fun too!
Located just steps away from Hotel Azure is the Lakeview Commons, which provides an excellent viewing experience. The stone amphitheater seating offers plenty of room for everyone, or if you’d rather stand up for the fun, head to the grass area up top which has enough room for your whole group. There are built-in charcoal barbecue pits and picnic tables ready for an all-day experience. Be aware that the lake is high and at its natural rim this year, so there is minimal sandy beach area.
For the Adventure Seekers
For the adventurer who is willing to put in the work, the top of Mount Tallac offers a bird’s eye view of the fireworks extravaganza. From the top view, you will be able to see not only the “Lights on the Lake” fireworks show, but also the other shows in Tahoe City and Incline Village, making it well worth the trip. But, don’t forget to pack your headlamp for the trek back down and make sure you carry extra batteries too.
Kayaking on Lake Tahoe
Another great way to experience the “Lights on the Lake” fireworks show and avoid crowds is watching on Lake Tahoe. But, don’t worry, you will not need to buy a yacht to get a million dollar view! Simply rent a kayak overnight from South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle Rentals and make your way out to the water. Get an experience like no other as the fireworks overhead almost seem to sprinkle down on you. After the show, do some fun star-gazing straight from your kayak.
The show is scheduled to begin at 9:45 PM, and don’t forget to tune your radio to KRLT-FM 93.9 or KOWL-AM 1490 for a synchronized music broadcast that will get your patriotic emotions flowing. Please respect the environment and pack your trash, and only leave your footprints behind.
