What to pack for the Fall in Lake Tahoe

8th September, 2020

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Lake Tahoe. There are fewer vacation crowds and the breathtaking autumn colors start peeking through, hiking and sightseeing are ideal activities. But Lake Tahoe can get rogue Fall blizzards and it has been known to snow every month of the year, so it is important to always be prepared!

Packing for Lake Tahoe

The Essentials

The Sierra Nevada mountains during the fall bring crisp mornings, warm days, and chilly evenings. The temperatures can easily fluctuate up to 50 degrees from the early morning to the mid-day afternoon. It is important to pack the essentials that will get you through any fall day. Here’s our list:

  • Waterproof Jacket, Shell, or Hoodie
  • Backpack/Daypack or Tote Bag (depending on if you're hiking)
  • Beanie/Hat
  • Hiking Boots Or Comfortable Shoes
  • Wool Socks
  • Short & Long Sleeves (The temperature tends to fluctuate)
  • Sunscreen & Sunglasses
  • Reusable Water Bottle: You can get easily dehydrated at high altitudes and Tahoe tap water is some of the best in the world
  • Gloves

From September through December, it's typical to get a mix of weather. For clothing, it is important to note that the days are likely going to be warm and sunny while the nights are going to be cold and make you feel like you need to bundle up in front of the fire. If you are coming during the fall with the hopes of spending some time on the trails or the beach, pack the clothes for the high temperature of the day but also bring an extra layer in case it gets chilly early. It's common for storms to move in quickly producing heavy rain, hail, and even snow so when hiking always carry emergency supplies and warm layers.
